THE 15 SMALLEST SUVS CURRENTLY ON SALE
Cute utes with the smallest footprints
This segment didn't really exist 10 years ago. As sedans and hatchbacks fall victim to the mighty force that is crossover fever, manufacturers can't move quickly enough to build every variation of SUV for every kind of buyer. Meanwhile, consumer demand for smaller, less expensive cars has increased. But how small are we talking? In this case, we're evaluating the size of these tiny crossovers based on their footprint: a factor of length and width that measures exactly how much real estate a vehicle occupies while parked. (For reference, the minimum standard parking stall in Los Angeles is 216.0 inches long and 100.0 inches wide, with an area of 150.0 square feet.) These are 15 of the smallest SUVs on sale right now.
BMW X2
Length: 172.2 inches
Width: 71.8 inches
Footprint: 85.9 square feet
The X2 was released in 2018 as a smaller, sportier alternative to BMW's slightly larger X1. A recent comparison test described the X2 as even smaller than its numbers suggest, but those compact dimensions just barely earned it a spot on this list.
JEEP RENEGADE
Length: 166.6 inches
Width: 74.2 inches
Footprint: 85.8 square feet
The smallest model in Jeep's SUV lineup, the Renegade actually has a larger footprint than one of its big siblings. It's also the widest car on the list.
MERCEDES GLA-CLASS
Length: 173.9 inches
Width: 71.0 inches
Footprint: 85.7 square feet
The CLA-based GLA looks a lot like a tall hatchback, especially in its 375-hp AMG GLA 45 configuration, which drops this baby ute's ride height dangerously close to car territory. Although this is the longest car on the list, it's shorter than its platform sibling, the Infiniti QX30, so it can still hang.
MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE CROSS
Length: 173.4 inches
Width: 71.1 inches
Footprint: 85.6 square feet
The supposedly sporty Eclipse Cross falls short of honoring its sport coupe namesake, but we did note how easy it is to park in a recent First Test.
