2019 BYTON M-BYTE FIRST LOOK: MEGA-BYTE

2019 BYTON M-BYTE FIRST LOOK: MEGA-BYTE

This particular version of Ogiso-san's nightmare adds a twist, though: The Byton isn't just another 0-60 EV railgun. While the 680-hp Tesla Model S P100D, 1,000-hp Lucid Air, and 754-hp Rivian R1T will all bazooka onto on-ramps, the Byton's standard configuration—with a modest 272 hp rear motor and 71-kW-hr battery (250-mile range)—will be merely "quick." Its "fast" version adds a front 204-hp motor that's really just a shortened (cheaper) version of rear one, and the automaker claims can travel a Tesla-like 325 miles on 95 kW-hr. But even then, its combined 476 hp won't raise one eyebrow among performance wonks these days. Although Tesla has sometimes crowed in their quarterly reports about MotorTrend's blistering Model S 0-60 times, Byton President Daniel Kirchert tepidly defended his car's performance to me, saying it's "not a lame duck."
To be honest, the keystone is probably another company entirely: Aurora Innovation, Byton's autonomous-tech partner. Although overshadowed by Waymo, Aurora is a first-tier player headed by Chris Urmson, from autonomous hotbed Carnegie Mellon, who became Chief Technology Officer of Alphabet's self-driving program; Sterling Anderson, MIT robotics Ph.D. who led the team that created Tesla's Autopilot; and Drew Bagnell, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute and founding member of Uber's Advanced Technology Center. It's an all-star trio Byton is relying on when the M-Byte (Byton's initial crossover offering) is delivered with available Level 3 autonomy late this year in China and 2020 in the U.S. and Europe. The prototype of the second Byton, the K-Byte sedan (due in 2021), even shows off visually obvious lidars—literally wearing its potential for Level 4 and 5 capability on its sleeve.

THIS THING IS RIDICULOUS

BMW VISION M NEXT CONCEPT: OUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF THIS TESLA THREAT

BMW VISION M NEXT CONCEPT: OUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF THIS TESLA THREAT We're not afraid of change,"  BMW  stated at its future-tech focused #NEXTGen event in Munich this week. And that's especially clear with the Vision M Next concept, a striking plug-in hybrid that's as quick as an M8 yet can go around 60 miles on EV power alone. You've seen the photos and  learned about the concept , but keep reading to learn about what the new BMW is like in person plus what angle Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president of BMW Group Design, especially likes. ACTUALLY YOU'RE RIGHT, BMW More than just text in a press release, the Vision M Next's dual-opening grille is faithful to the brand but really does have a sense of depth to it. Behind the silver grille trim you'd expect and the laser-etched pattern you might not, Thrilling Orange paint brightens up the trim behind the silver-accented grille. The effect powerfully emphasizes the latest evolution o

HERE'S EVERY CADILLAC V SERIES WE'VE EVER DRIVEN

HERE'S EVERY CADILLAC V SERIES WE'VE EVER DRIVEN It's hard to overstate how big a deal  the 2003 CTS  was for  Cadillac . The angular, aggressive styling was much more memorable than the forgettable Catera it replaced, and its sport-tuned suspension made it a legitimate alternative to the  BMW 3 Series . Cadillac could have stopped there, but it didn't. The next year, it gave the CTS a 400-hp V-8 and the kind of handling that quickly had people calling it the four-door Corvette Z06. With that, the V Series was born. Cadillac is now celebrating 15 years of the V badge, and with the recent introduction of the  CT4-V  and  CT5-V , the brand has signaled a  shift in strategy for the V Series . The V-Sport line is gone, which instantly promotes all performance Cadillacs to full-blown V model status. Until we drive the CT4-V and CT5-V, we can't know if they're worthy of the badge, but it's hard to imagine they are just looking at on-paper specs. However, Cadil
